How big?

One of the most common questions we hear is, “What size solar system should I install?” Our advice? Install as much as your roof, budget, and local network limits allow. We’ve never had a customer regret investing in a larger system, but we often hear from homeowners wishing they’d installed more panels while they had the opportunity. Expanding an existing system later can be both costly and complicated.

Even if your current energy needs are modest, future-proofing your system is a smart move. As battery storage and electric vehicle adoption become more common, having a larger solar system now will save you time, money, and hassle down the line.

That said, there are limits to consider. For example, Ergon Energy, our local network provider, imposes a 5kW feed-in limit unless you negotiate a higher export agreement. While your system might have the capacity to produce more, it will be configured to export only up to this limit. This constraint often plays a key role in determining the system size for our customers.

For single-phase properties, Ergon enforces a 10kVA inverter capacity limit, with a maximum export limit of 5kW. For instance, if your home is using 1kW of power, the system will ramp up to generate a total of 6kW (5kW for export and 1kW for usage) even if the system’s potential capacity is higher.

This can be confusing, and unfortunately, not all solar retailers explain these details clearly. It’s crucial to gather all the facts before deciding on the best system size for your needs.

If your existing solar system is nearing the end of its life, it might be time for an upgrade. Even if you’ve already claimed a government rebate for your current system, you may still qualify for another rebate when upgrading.

Choosing the right solar system size can feel overwhelming, but we’re here to help guide you through the process. By understanding your current and future energy needs, network limitations, and available incentives, you can make an informed decision that maximizes your investment and benefits for years to come.
